Who Needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?
Operators of power-driven pleasure craft must obtain and carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card on board at all times. It's the law! It applies to all operators of power boats, personal watercraft and motorized sailing craft.
The law is being phased in over a 10 year period.
When Do I Need My Card?
All operators born after April 1, 1983 need their card now !
All operators of craft under 4 m in length (including PWCs) need their card now !
All operators (no matter what their age or size of craft they operate), will need their card by September 15, 2009
How Do I Get My Card?
BOATsmart! Canada recommends that you participate in our Safe Boating training course. You can also purchase the BOATsmart! Canada Study Guide in book or CD-ROM format. All of BOATsmart! Canada's training materials and exams are Canadian Coast Guard Accredited.
When you're ready, you can obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card by taking the BOATsmart! Canada Challenge Exam. The exam consists of 36 multiple choice questions and you need to obtain a mark of 75% to pass.
Good For Life!
Remember, once obtained, your Pleasure Craft Operator Card is good for life.
